Big Changes Coming to the ACT
If you’re planning to take the ACT in 2025 or beyond, listen up—there are some pretty big changes coming your way. Whether you're a student gearing up for test day or a parent trying to stay on top of all the college prep madness, we've got you covered. Here's what’s new, and what it means for you.
1. The Science Section Is Now Optional (!)
Yep, you read that right. Starting in April 2025, students will be able to choose whether or not they want to take the Science section. So if science isn't your thing, you might be breathing a little easier. The ACT will still include English, Math, and Reading by default—those are required—but Science is officially moving to the “bonus round” category.
That said, some colleges might still want to see a Science score, so definitely check their requirements before you skip it!
2. The Test Is Getting Shorter (Finally)
We all know the ACT is kind of a marathon. But good news: it’s getting trimmed down. With the Science section out of the core test, the overall time drops from about 3 hours and 15 minutes to just over 2 hours (125 minutes, to be exact).
Fewer questions, more time per question—it’s a small but meaningful change that could help reduce burnout during the exam.
3. Fewer Answer Choices in Math
Instead of five options per Math question, you’ll now see four. That might not sound like a huge deal, but fewer choices can mean a quicker decision process—and a slightly better chance of guessing right if you’re stumped.
4. Shorter Reading & English Passages
ACT is cutting down the length of passages in the English and Reading sections. That means less reading and more time to focus on answering questions. It's a win for students who get bogged down in long texts or who feel rushed by the clock.
5. Digital or Paper—You Choose
You’ll also get the option to take the ACT online or on paper. This gives students more flexibility based on how they test best. Prefer typing and clicking? Go digital. Want to stick with bubbling in answers the old-school way? That’s still on the table.
6. When These Changes Kick In
April 2025: First rollout of the new format (online only)
September 2025: All test-takers (paper and digital) will see the changes
Spring 2026: Updates hit school-based testing
Final Thoughts
These updates are all about making the ACT more flexible and student-friendly. Whether you’re testing this year or next, it’s a good idea to start thinking about how these changes might affect your prep. Should you keep Science in your plan? Is digital testing a better fit for you? Start exploring your options now—future you will thank you.
